THE PERFECT PINEAPPLE & FLAMINGO PARTY

Let’s be honest, first birthdays are really for the parents and not the kids. If we were planning parties truly for the kids we could just fill a room with cheerios, rolls of toilet paper, squeeze pouches and TVs playing the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse on repeat.

Since I was really throwing a party for myself for surviving the first year of motherhood I chose a theme that would FINALLY let me buy a giant flamingo float. I’ve been eyeing one all summer long and I should have bought one when we floated down the French Broad earlier in the summer but I was afraid it would pop and leave me for dead on the bottom of the river. Or I should have bought one for all those weekends at the lake but who has the time to inflate a giant flamingo when you are wrestling babies all day and night. And since my husband seems to think it’s unacceptable to float around on a giant flamingo at the country club I didn’t buy one for our pool days either. So naturally I had to settle for puffing it up and putting it in the back yard during a party. (I would like it to be noted that now that I have one the sky is the limit for next summer.)

With my flamingo rant behind me let me now talk a little about the decor. It looks like a ton of hard work and decorating but really it was some strategic shopping one afternoon, a little bit of set-up time, and a mom, mother-in-law, aunt and grandma group of cooking elves in your corner. (Because let’s be honest I spent an hour rearranging napkins on the table and would have just ordered in pizza and McDonalds if it was up to me.)

To start the process of party-planning this pineapply and flamingo party, a.k.a decorating, I made a mood board to get my creative juices flowing. For setup I put my husband in charge of all the inflatables in the yard and blowing up the balloons and I concentrated on the drink stand and tables. For creating tablescapes I like to just think of it as layering products until you finish the masterpiece.

First I started with a cheap-o mint tablecloth, made a runner with oversized palm leaves, plopped some pineapples on the table and flanked them with cups filled with flowers. For the place settings I stacked palm plates with pink napkins and flamingo napkins and used solid cutlery. Every place-setting also had a pineapple cups complete with a flamingo straws that guests could fill up with punch, water or their beverage of choice. Then I placed an inflatable flamingo cup holder at every seat for bottles of water or the diet cokes I had iced down prior to the party. To keep the napkins from flying away I used flamingo rubber duckies and I also decorated the table with mini bubble containers that I bought to use as favors.

I really loved that once the party was over the kids could take the mini beach balls, pineapple cups, rubber ducky flamingos and flamingo straws home as favors. And we sent the adults home with the flamingo koozies and diet cokes in glass bottles as a thank you for enduring the birthday party/circus. All in all it was a great afternoon celebrating my sweet little Caroline Scott!

(Thank you so much to Diet Coke for sponsoring this post, Sweet Lulu for the beautiful decorations, Meghan Huckaby for the delicious cake, Merci Bakery for the flamingo cookies and Katheryn Blythe for the photos to cherish! And thank you for reading this pineapple and flamingo party  post and supporting the brands that make this blog possible!)
