5 Fun Ways to Keep Your Kids Entertained at Home This Summer

Sponsored by shopDisney and ShopStyle

School is officially out, my kids are home, and I am looking for anything and everything to keep them entertained and busy outside. While I try to maximize my time with them in the summers, I still have two businesses to run from home. We try to travel as much as possible when they aren’t in school and they love a camp. But for those days when we are home, I don’t want them to look back on summers and recall me just working away while they sit in front of a TV. After a few years of trial and error, I have found a few fun ways to keep my kids entertained and allow me to run a business from home. Here are some of my best tips, in our cute new summer gear from shopDisney!

Play Dress Up!

You have to go into this one knowing that the playroom or bedroom is going to turn into a disaster, but it is a great way to give you some focused time and let your kids have fun while doing so. I love to make this almost like a scavenger hunt as well because it takes up more time and lets them use their creativity when you do it this way! I will tell them to go dress up in their craziest outfit, their favorite outfit, go put on something that you would wear to a ball, on an adventure, etc. We have collected our share of shopDisney costumes over the years and they have a BLAST with this! They even have a whole selection for pretend play!

Summer School. But Make It Fun.

I routinely buy fun activity books and STEM toys for them to play with over the summer and shopDisney has a great collection of them! I find this works best if I sit at the kitchen table and work while they “work” or “have school.”

Have Fun With Water

We now have a stock tank pool, but don’t discount a good old-fashioned sprinkler or water-balloon fight as a go-to summer activity. The best part of a water balloon fight is then you can have a hunt to pick up all the pieces and trade them in for a popsicle!  I also will let the girls fill up watering pails and go water the flowers. For now, they still really like this, and it takes them a good bit of time to go back and forth from the house. They will pour some on each other, on themselves, but for now they see it as a fun chore and I’m not complaining! shopDisney has a great selection of outdoor toys which will be on sale throughout this season if you are looking for something to keep your little ones entertained.

Make Movies An Experience

I don’t want my kids glued to the TV all day during the summer, so we typically wait until an afternoon rainstorm or the evening. Then we make the movie extra fun. Sometimes we build a fort and project the movie onto the wall, sometimes we move the coffee table and make a palette on the floor and yes, sometimes we watch it in the movie room while I sit in the back and work on my laptop. But at least they get popcorn! We recently saw Cruella in theaters and I immediately bought it on Disney+ to watch on repeat. Here are a few of our other favorite Disney movies:

Aladdin

Enchanted

Maleficent

Mulan

Raya and the Last Dragon

Swiss Family Robinson

The Incredibles

When In Doubt, Popsicles

Seriously. I buy the healthiest, filled with fruit, popsicles that I can and use them all day long as rewards, time savers and all our bribes. No regrets.
