Hi friends! Today I’m joining in with the One Room Challenge to transform our master bedroom and as Zach so eloquently put it…. “this feels vulnerable.” I typically only spend my time posting about outfits, shopping, beauty or travel so decor is a relatively new thing for me to share. I have only actually decorated two rooms in my house, my little girl’s nursery and my dining room which you can see in this post. I love interior design but my husband and I work in construction so any time we start talking about redecorating it quickly landslides into a let’s install these fixtures, take down these walls and while we’re at it let’s just move and build a modern farmhouse kind of scenario.
And that’s real. We have lived in this house for 5 years and are continuously debating staying or moving. Not just in a hypothetical sense of we would like to one day but in a “we own land and have randomly shown our house once or twice” kind of way. Every other week we’re going to sell it and then every other week we’re going to stay here to save money so we can build the house we really want. Essentially I’m hesitant to spend a ton of money knowing that we might just up and move. It’s also the same reason why I haven’t really made too much progress on buying furniture for this room in the past five years. Hence the mismatched bedside “tables” and hand-me-down chair with a leg falling off.
Our bedroom is functional and pretty enough but I want to revamp it since I have started filming YouTube tutorials from there and frequently post outfits from it in my instagram stories. I suppose now that people are actually seeing it I finally have the kick in the pants needed to finish it. The One Room Challenge is also helping to get me motivated because there is a weekly deadline! If you’re not familiar, the One Room Challenge is an online event where bloggers link up and transform a room from beginning to end. The posts go live every Thursday and in six weeks you will see a room transform from start to finish. Now let’s dive in to what I’m hoping to accomplish.I want to keep the bed and the dresser as well as the wall color. It just doesn’t make since for me to buy a new bed quite yet and we just painted the walls Collonade Gray not too long ago. I also really love my Emily Jeffords print above the bed and those deer prints on the far wall.
I like my slightly French, makeshift bedside table that I put together with items from Home Goods but I really would love to have new matching nightstands. Ideally I will be going with matching dressers for more storage and because I literally cannot deal with seeing cords. It drives me absolutely nuts.
I desperately need to do something with that left corner and probably will be looking into getting a bigger mirror as well. For the hallways we are thinking of either hanging art with picture lights or putting in sliding barn doors to give us more room in our closets. Decisions decisions.
This view shows you the three things that absolutely must go. The chair is broken and doesn’t match the room. Same for the bookshelf. And the fan has absolutely got to go. Not only do we need more lighting because this side of the house is dark but I also just hate it. We also really want new carpet, hardwoods or to somehow hide the carper with a rug which isn’t ideal but could work until we move.
So what do you think? Maybe that I should shiplap that back wall now that you think about it? Me too. And I should probably definitely put in hardwoods? I’ve got all kinds of second-guessing myself going on right now in my head and to say the least this will be an interesting 6 weeks. My hopes are to keep what I love about the room, subtract some items, add some items and overall create a visually appealing space with a cohesive design. This won’t be the drastic rags to riches makeover that you might see on other decor blogs. In fact you might not even be able to tell a huge difference when I’m done (I’m a little nervous about it). I’m hoping that what I lack in the “wow factor” I make up with humor, honesty and a load of tips and tricks I learn along the way. Here’s to a new adventure and I’ll see you back here every Thursday for the next 5 weeks. Next week I will be talking all about the fabulous company that is going to help me source some products and design the space!
Eeeek Can’t wait to see how this comes together! You already have so many amazing elements in place, but the tweaks you want to make are going to make a huge difference as well. And if you decide to get rid of that art over your bed…I’m your girl. It’s gorgeous!! xoxo
i second mallory- so many great starting pieces! can’t wait to see where it goes!
I so enjoy following you and your cute family on Instagram and I am excited that you are tackling home decor, for a bit of a selfish reason. My husband and I own a furniture/home decor store and I am always interested in the buying habits of your age group. Usually I find that most furniture purchases are made online (from big box stores) and while I understand that with busy lives and the ease of online shopping that this is an extremely convenient way to shop…. I also know that you don’t actually get the best buys this way and that mistakes are costly. Will be watching!
I suppose it just doesn’t do to have a broken chair, does it? I’m definitely looking forward to seeing what you do with the space over the next few weeks!
I think you should shiplap that back wall too! It is amazing how small changes even can totally transform a space. I’m looking forward to seeing how your decisions turn this into a space you love. You have some really good bones in here and I would reuse much of what you have too.
I’m hauling in my patio table for my dining room transformation. I’ll be watching this one!

I am excited to see your progress. I am also doing a master bedroom, and your “before” looks way better than mine, haha!
I can’t wait to follow along! Been loving your sneak peeks at the room through Instagram stories, and I can’t wait to see how it all comes together.
Glad to see you’re taking the plunge! Can’t wait to follow along!
Ooooo I love the print above your bed too, so I am so glad you’re keeping it! Cannot wait to see what you decide to do with lighting!!! xx
“Not only do we need more lighting because this side of the house is dark but I also just hate it.” That sounds like me with the lighting in our bathroom, lol! It’s dark, so we need a bigger, better light fixture. Also, I hate it. 🙂
Good luck! I’m sure it will turn out much more beautiful than you are giving yourself credit for! I love the current nightstand too but understand wanting matching and more storage! Love the Emily Jeffords print too!
Very excited to see how your room comes together! I am making over my “master bedroom” as well.
Will be following along!

I can’t wait to see what you do with the bedroom! I love how you have your nightstand styled. This is my first ORC and I am making over my home office! I will def. be following your progress and can’t wait to see how it turns out!
I’m so excited to see how you change this room! I’m making our my Master as well so I’ll be joining in on your journey!
I love the one room challenge, it really gets everyone into gear and produces such lovely rooms. The best part about the room you chose to redecorate is that it has amazing bones. You have plenty of space to change things up and such a good backdrop for fun home decor. Really looking forward to seeing what you will do here.
I can’t wait to see how it all comes together. I am doing my master bedroom as well, but I have a lot more to do than you. Your room has some great pieces already!! Quick question, how tall are your lamps. I am struggling with finding the right height!!
