We’ve all been there. You’re headed out the door to grab a coffee, taking your kids over to a friend’s house for a playdate or maybe you just need to go to the grocery store and can’t bring yourself to put on “real pants”. If you are a female in today’s world chances are leggings are a very real part of your wardrobe. There are some people out there who would argue leggings aren’t pants and shouldn’t be worn with anything other than a long tunic or a dress. I would say to those people a) you aren’t wearing the right pair, b) you aren’t wearing the right top with them and c) shut your mouth I’ll wear whatever I want to because I have two kids under age three and 9 days out of 10 I’m just trying to survive.

You might remember a little series I blogged about called Mom Style Monday. Well today we are officially kicking things off and talking all about loungewear! I think the recipe to a successful loungewear look is one part leggings, one part long top, one part outerwear to keep you cozy and/or hid your rear and one part comfy shoes. Let’s break down each of these items below.
Leggings – If you are looking for a no-fail pair of leggings this pair is hands down my favorite and what I’m wearing in the photos in this post. They have a control top, don’t move when you bed over and are generally wonderful. In second place is this pair from Nordstrom. These also are high waisted and again they are super comfy. Coming in third is this pair from Lululemon. A favorite among my friends, I agree they are great but I just love the other two more. If leggings aren’t technically your thing and you are maybe a little more sporty then a next best alternative to not having to wear actual pants are joggers. This pair is excellent and so is this one.

Top – A top that covers your backside is critical when wearing leggings. I don’t think anything else needs to be explained about this because surely we can all agree that it is only decent that you cover yourself in public. If you’re looking to add to your collection of easy-to-wear basics then this one my no-fail go-to top and the one I’m wearing in these photos. And bonus! It’s only $18. Another great option to have is this reversible tee that you can wear knotted in the front or the back. Here are a couple more options for you to peruse:

Outerwear – I always have been and always will be a huge fan of the vest. I mean what is not to love exactly? No sleeves so I don’t feel like I’m suffocating, pockets to hold all of my stuff and it keeps me warm. No wonder I wear them almost every day in the fall and winter. If I had to pick my two favorite vests to wear they would be this one from J.Crew or this one from Patagonia. I also think cardigans are really cute to style with leggings. I don’t own a ton of them since they make me feel like I’m dying a slow death from suffocation but if you are a cardigan girl I included a couple of my favorites below.
Shoes – This is a huge component for chic loungewear. After all, if your feet aren’t comfy then you aren’t comfy. I think your three best options for shoes to wear with leggings are sneakers, slip-ons and slippers/loafers. I love my Nikes and don’t really wear another brand of sneakers but I think Vans are very cute from a slip-on perspective. If you are in the market for a very comfy shoe to wear then you should check out Birdies. They sent me a pair of their shearling insole slippers and they are seriously the most comfortable shoes. The soles are hard so you can wear them outside but the inside feels like you’re wearing bedroom shoes. Genius!

I am too scared to wear leggings because I don’t want to display myself inappropriately. I do agree that I should wear a shirt to cover my backside. Do you have any specific tips for an overweight girl like me?
Pairing a vest with leggings is super cute! I love those leopard flats!
