Review: Revlon One Step Hair Dryer vs. Drybar Double Shot

Drybar Double Shot versus the Revlon One Step Hair Dryer and Volumizer

The long awaited review of two of the most popular hair dryer brushes, the Revlon Pro Collection Salon One Step Hair Dryer and Volumizer versus the Drybar Double Shot. Now these have two very different price points (about $150 for the Drybar compared to $59 for the Revlon) but they look almost identical when it comes to size and weight of the brush itself.

Why You Should Use a Blow Dryer Brush

With long hair, I love the thought of a blow dryer brush to get the look and save time. If you have short hair and wear it straight, a two-in-one hair dryer brush would take you no time to get ready.

Regardless of the brand you use, you should start by sectioning your hair into four parts (two upper and two lower). I normally let my hair air dry slightly before using a blow dryer brush, but you can use it on damp hair. Then you take your hair section by section, continuously moving the brush over the strands. It’s also a great idea to use a heat protectant before you style. I really love this spray from Sephora!

Drybar Double Shot Hair Dryer

The Double Shot two heat settings, both high and low. I noticed it has more bristles and higher quality bristles than the Revlon, as well as more vents evenly placed around the brush. Overall it took about two minutes to dry a quarter of my hair and left it smooth and frizz free.

Revlon One Step Hair Dryer & Volumizer

The Revlon brush also has two heat settings, low and high. I tried to dry a quarter section of my hair with the Revlon on high but it got way too hot and had a burning smell. I have pretty fine hair and did not want to fry it. Once I turned the brush down to low, it was much more manageable, but not as efficient since it takes longer. But, I’m slightly terrified that the Revlon blow dry brush smells like burning plastic.

Final Verdict

Honestly, I couldn’t tell enough difference in my hair between the Drybar and the Revlon once the entire process was complete. With the Revlon One Step on low, it did take longer than the Drybar, which in my humble opinion defeats the purpose of having a two-in-one blow dry brush to save time.

The Drybar Double Shot is expensive, but it didn’t get too hot, or have a burning smell and being able to use the high setting was quick and efficient. While the Revlon is good, I don’t think it’s worth the savings to risk frying your hair and would just stick to a good ole’ fashioned hair dryer. I’ve continued to use the Drybar Double Shot to dry my hair and for the girls (on the low setting) and have let several people borrow it to try. So far, everyone has loved it.

Your Feedback

After posting to Instagram and Facebook I got a ton of feedback, especially from Revlon One Step users. The general consensus is that the burning smell goes away after a couple of uses – great! But, many people said the Revlon was damaging to their hair on the high setting, especially hair that is fine or color treated. For those of you with thick, dye-free hair, the Revlon One Step on the low setting might be a great budget friendly choice, but many followers said they were going to splurge for the Drybar version or save up and wait for the Sephora VIB Sale or Nordstrom Anniversary Sale.
